CHESS LORE

Terms of Use

These terms are an agreement between you and Federico Vellani, the developer of Chess Lore. They are not an agreement with Apple, Google, or anyone else who sells you the app. Read them before you install it; installing it means you accept them.

1. What Chess Lore is

Chess Lore is a single-player chess role-playing game for phones and tablets. You walk a valley, meet people, and play chess against them. It runs on the device: there is no account to create, no server that holds your progress, and no other players to meet.

The game is offered as it is, for entertainment. It is not a chess coaching service and nothing in it is advice you should rely on for anything outside the game.

2. The licence you get

You get a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to install and use Chess Lore on any device you own or control, under the usage rules of the store you got it from. The licence covers the app as delivered; it does not sell you the app.

  • You may not sell, rent, sublicense, or redistribute the app or any part of it.
  • You may not copy, decompile, reverse-engineer, or attempt to derive the source code, except where that is expressly permitted by law that cannot be waived.
  • You may not modify the app or create derivative works from it.
  • The licence ends if you break these terms, and it ends when you delete the app.

3. In-app purchases

Chess Lore offers optional in-app purchases. Some are packs of fiorini, the coin you spend inside the game: those are consumable, and they land in your bag the moment you buy them. Others are one-off unlocks, which are non-consumable and stay yours. There is no subscription and nothing renews. What each one gives you is described on the purchase screen inside the game, with the price your store charges, before you pay.

The payment is handled entirely by the store you bought the app from. We never see your card, and we do not process the transaction. The price shown in the game is the price the store charges, in your currency, including any tax the store collects.

You can restore a non-consumable unlock on any device signed in to the same store account, from the same screen you bought it on. Restoring is free and does not charge you again. Fiorini work differently: they are spent inside the game and they live in the save on your device, so they cannot be restored, and deleting the app deletes them with the rest of the save.

Refunds are handled by the store, not by us. On the App Store you request one through Apple; the store’s terms decide whether it is granted. If a purchase fails or does not unlock what it says, write to us and we will help you sort it out with the store.

4. Who can use it

Chess Lore contains no violence, no gambling, no user-generated content, and no way to talk to anyone. It is rated on each store according to its content, and the rating shown there is the one that applies.

If you are a minor under the law of your country, use the app with the involvement of a parent or guardian, and let them read these terms with you. If you are under the age at which you can agree to a contract, your parent or guardian accepts them on your behalf.

5. Support and maintenance

Support for Chess Lore is ours, not the store’s. Apple in particular has no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance or support services for the app. Write to gradlyforsup@gmail.com and a person answers.

We may release updates, and we may change or remove parts of the game in them. We are not obliged to keep any particular feature, and we are not obliged to keep the app available for ever — but we will not take away something you paid for while you still have the app installed.

6. Warranty

The app is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we give no warranty that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.

In the event of any failure of the app to conform to any warranty that does apply, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the app; any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility, not Apple’s.

Nothing here limits any right you have under mandatory consumer law in your country. Those rights come first.

7. Claims, and who answers them

We, and not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim you or a third party makes about the app or your use of it. That includes product liability claims, any claim that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar law.

We, and not Apple, are responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement, and discharge of any third-party claim that the app or your use of it infringes that third party’s intellectual property rights.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything connected with the app is limited to what you paid for it.

8. Intellectual property

The game, its code, its art, its music, its writing, and the name Chess Lore belong to Federico Vellani and are protected by copyright. The licence in section 2 is all the permission you get; nothing else is granted, expressly or by implication.

Chess Lore is built on open-source software. Those components keep their own licences, which we respect; the full list is available on request at gradlyforsup@gmail.com.

9. Legal compliance

By using Chess Lore you represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or designated by the U.S. Government as a terrorist-supporting country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

10. Third-party beneficiary

Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Upon your acceptance of them, Apple has the right — and is deemed to have accepted the right — to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.

11. Changes, law, and contact

We may update these terms when the app changes. The version on this page is the one that applies, and the date at the foot of the page says when it was last touched. If a change matters to you, the remedy is simple and always available: stop using the app.

These terms are governed by Italian law, without prejudice to any mandatory protection you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

Questions, complaints, and claims go to Federico Vellani, gradlyforsup@gmail.com.
